Delighted Ryan Lowe hails ‘terrific’ Bury display against Grimsby

Bury manager Ryan Lowe struggled to contain his delight after his side thumped Grimsby in a comfortable 4-0 victory at Gigg Lane.

Danny Mayor was the star of the show, bagging two terrific goals as the Shakers eased to successive League Two wins for the first time this season.

Mayor slotted home early on after leaving two desperate Grimsby defender trailing in his wake before defender Will Aimson nodded home Nicky Adams’ corner to put the hosts 2-0 up at the break.

It was 3-0 when Danny Collins steered into his own net after Chris Dagnall’s shot has bounced back out off a post before Mayor then curled home from 25 yards to wrap up a fine Bury display.

Lowe said: “I’m really delighted because that was almost a perfect performance.

“We showed great presence all around the pitch and we kept pressing Grimsby and getting in their faces.

“Fair play to the lads. They’ve taken on board everything I’ve told them this week, and when you see it come off like that it’s very pleasing.

“That’s six points from the last couple of Saturdays, but we certainly won’t be getting carried away.

“The momentum seems to be turning for us again now, and I can’t praise the lads enough. It was a terrific performance.”

Lowe also heaped praise on two-goal Mayor, who had been ill in the build-up to the game.

“Danny had been suffering during the week,” added Lowe.

“There had been a bit of a bug going around. He just wants to play, though. That’s just the kind of lad he is.

“We know he’s capable of those wonder goals, so I’m delighted for him.”

Grimsby boss Michael Jolley was clearly frustrated as his side extend their search for a second win of the season, with most of the travelling fans leaving the stadium well before the final whistle.

“The first thing I want to say is a big thank you to the fans who remained inside the ground until the final whistle,” said Jolley.

“They supported us to the end, and that’s what we’re going to need over the next few games at least.

“Those fans were the only people connected with our club who can go and take any credit from what happened here.

“We know we need to do much, much better. The performance was nowhere near good enough.

“We played a bit of football in the first half in particular, but overall were just too ineffective, both with the ball and without it.

“As a collective we’ve just got to be more ruthless. It’s as simple as that.

“We’ll have to go away and take a good, long look at what went on here, and we’ll come back fighting.

“We weren’t up the standard required here, and we’ll look at that this week.”
