The dangers that Lopetegui faces at Real Madrid

No one told him it was going to be easy, but surely Julen Lopetegui did not expect such a winding journey as Real Madrid's new coach.

It was always going to be tough joining after the reign of Zinedine Zidane and losing Cristiano Ronaldo but Lopetegui is stepping in to build something of his own.

However, only three months after taking over the role, he is in trouble. On the pitch, the team is in a crisis in terms of performance and results while off it, some of Lopetegui's decisions are being questioned.

Bad Results

Lopetegui's debut was poisoned by the European Super Cup. Derby and title, an explosive mixture. And he lost it. What happens here is that the beginning already had a blemish and then more errors soon followed as Real Madrid have already lost matches in both LaLiga Santander and the Champions League. In the domestic league, Lopetegui mirrors the bad start of the teams from the 2017/18 season under Zidane but the defeat in Europe only adds fuel to the fire.

The Goalkeeper Debate

The continuous debate between having Keylor Navas or newly signed Thibaut Courtois between the sticks has the club boiling. Both are exceptional keepers however Lopetegui still has to come up with a plan as to who will play which games (both in LaLiga Santander and the Champions League).

The 'Vinicius case'

The young Brazilian provides another sticking point for Lopetegui. The best solution for Vinicius Junior has been sought given the situation, but the initial plan was not to have him participate more in Castilla than the first team. Lopetegui feels as though the youngster is not ready and thus only gave him two minutes in the Madrid derby.

The 'forgotten' signings

In addition to Vinicius, Mariano Diaz has not yet started a match and Alvaro Odriozola is also struggling to gain a place despite the injuries of Dani Carvajal. You also can not forgot the issue between Courtois and Navas.

Uncertainty in the dressing room

There also seems to be a certain rumble in the dressing room between Lopetegui and the players. Some of the coach's decisions are being questioned, most recently the idea to rest Sergio Ramos against CSKA, which Lopetegui hasn't explained much. Leaving out the captain during a time as delicate as this is confusing for some.

Calendar and injuries

The tough games are finally here and Lopetegui feared these two weeks and what they may bring. The team did not achieve good results against Sevilla or Atletico Madrid, their two most demanding tests, and the injuries have not helped at all.

The ghost of CR7

The lack of goals continues to have the ghost of Cristiano Ronaldo looming over the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu and remains to be a pending issue. The output of CR7 has nothing to do with Lopetegui, but the prolonged scoring drought that hinders the team certainly does.
