Micky Mellon hails ‘great win’ for Tranmere after they edge seven-goal thriller

Micky Mellon was full of praise for both sides after Tranmere edged to a 4-3 victory over Morecambe.

Tranmere boss Mellon admitted there were areas of his side’s game that disappointed him but said he would put them to one side and concentrate on the positives.

On-loan Sheffield United man Harvey Gilmour was the hero for Rovers with two goals in his first league start for the club.

Morecambe had taken the lead with a superb individual goal from Rhys Oates after 13 minutes before Tranmere went 2-1 up with goals from Ollie Banks and Gilmour.

Jonny Smith made it 3-1 with a fine finish from the edge of the box before Morecambe hit back through Vadaine Oliver and AJ Leitch-Smith before Gilmour stuck after 89 minutes with a superb finish from Zoumana Bakayogo’s pull-back.

Mellon said: “It was a proper game of football with both sides going hell for leather and it was a great win for us.

“There were a lot of things we could improve on because at 3-1 up I thought we were cruising from then on in. We missed some good chances to really kill it off and all of a sudden it was 3-3 and could have gone either way.

“From a coach’s point of view I know what we should have done better but I am not going to criticise anyone after that game of football and will work on things in the week.

“It was just one of those days where the play went from end to end and although there were seven goals there could have been a lot more as two groups of players had a right good go in an atmosphere that was fantastic and the football was superb.

“There was no real shape to the game because it was so end-to-end but I have to praise our lads because we were without our top scorer but we still scored four goals, with Harvey Gilmour making a great impression with his two goals.”

Morecambe boss Jim Bentley said his side were disappointed to concede late in the game after working had to come from 3-1 down to level the scores.

He said: “It was an excellent game and eventful to say the least but unfortunately we came out the wrong side of it.

“When you score three goals at home you shouldn’t really be losing games and our inexperience at the back came through a little.

“But I can’t really criticise the lads too much because they put in a fantastic effort, played some great stuff and helped make it a brilliant game of football for everyone to watch.

“We weren’t helped by some of the decisions that clearly went against us but we kept on battling and I know the fans recognised that. We played some lovely football at times but at the back we need to show a bit more.”
