Peterborough boss Steve Evans hopes two-goal Matt Godden stays under the radar

Peterborough boss Steve Evans is happy for Matt Godden to remain under the radar after watching the striker bag a brace to down former club Scunthorpe.

The 27-year-old notched twice in seven second-half minutes, his 10th and 11th goal of a successful start to life for Posh following a summer switch from Stevenage.

Godden has remained out of the limelight when it comes to recognising the third tier’s top talent, but while the Peterborough manager is surprised, he does not mind one bit.

“I keep reading teams of the season so far. Matty’s not been picked for any of them and I don’t want him to be. Leave him alone I say,” Evans said.

“Matty comes alive in the box. Sometimes you look at his all-round play and you have a few questions, but put the ball into the final third and he’ll get about it.

“He’s a brilliant professional. He practices every single day, to the point that he does my head in – smashing balls about near my office window – but it’s not just about him, they’re a great group.

“The players and the staff have taken a lot of criticism this week, some of which we felt was justified and some which was over the top.

“But I said to the players the way to react to that was to go and produce a confident and clinical performance at Scunthorpe, which we’ve done.”

Godden broke the deadlock after 51 minutes, Posh breaking quickly downfield from which the striker steered home Colin Daniel’s cross.

He doubled his own and his side’s tally seven minutes later, this time firing low into the bottom corner after cutting inside, albeit some clumsy goalkeeping from Scunthorpe’s Jak Alnwick, who let the ball slip through his grasp.

Before the deadlock had been broken, it had been the home side who looked the most likely scorers, with Stephen Humphrys lobbing the ball into the side netting when put through on goal and Josh Morris heading over.

Iron boss Stuart McCall rued the “two soft goals” his side gave away in the defeat which leaves them in 13th place in the League One table.

“Yes, we were playing a side who are right up there – second in the league and the top scorers – but the big disappointment is we conceded two soft goals,” McCall said.

“I’ll be the first to put my hands up if someone scores a ‘worldie’ – but the first goal was about a lack of concentration and we switched off at the back post.

“The second was a goalkeeping error, though Jak has been outstanding for us this season, and I think that deflated us.

“I wanted to see a bit more of a spine and fightback about us once that happened.

“I know Peterborough are a good side and score lots of goals, but today I felt we gave as good as we got and on another day, if we’d have taken our chances, the result could have been different.”
