Danny Cowley apologises to fans after Lincoln are held in Carlisle draw

Danny Cowley issued an apology to Lincoln City fans after the Imps were held to a 2-2 draw by Carlisle United.

The League Two leaders had to come from behind twice to secure a point against the Cumbrians, with all the goals coming in the first half.

Ashley Nadesan scored both Carlisle goals with Michael O’Connor and Bruno Andrade hitting back for the league leaders.

After the match, a disgruntled Cowley hit out at his side’s defending and also criticised the lack of water on the Sincil Bank pitch.

“I want to apologise to the fans for the way we defended,” said Cowley. “We were poor defensively, particularly in the first half.

“The two goals we conceded were absolutely unacceptable, right down the middle of the pitch.

“It’s very hard to win football matches 3-2. So I’m disappointed because we had unbelievable support, almost 10,000 here on a Tuesday night.”

Cowley then hit out at the dryness of the pitch which he says made it difficult for his side to move the ball quickly against a well-drilled Carlisle side.

“We played with no water on the pitch,” he added. “There’s been a mistake at the club. The water was turned off on Saturday and, as a consequence, the tank didn’t fill up.

“I’ve done enough of these press conference and I don’t make excuses. I really try to stay away from them.

“But when you’re at the home and the onus is on you to win and you’re playing against a team who play narrow, you have to move the ball really quickly. But if the grass is not wet, then the ball moves really slowly.”

Meanwhile, United boss John Sheridan was thrilled as his side bounced back from Saturday’s shock defeat at lowly Macclesfield.

Sheridan branded Carlisle’s display at Moss Road poor, but was delighted with the response.

“Everyone knew what their job was and it was a hardworking workmanlike performance,” said Sheridan.

“We worked our socks off and had a few little openings and chances ourselves.

“I’ve always said we’ve got a good group. I don’t want to talk after a game about why we haven’t played well. That’s not my cup of tea.

“But I expect better because we’ve got better players than we’ve shown. I believe we should be in the top six.

“At Macclesfield we didn’t play well at all. We let ourselves down and I’ve got to make it clear to the players that I expect more from them.

“In that performance (at Lincoln), we showed some grit and took a point. If we’d played like we did tonight on Saturday, we would have won that game.

“But it’s long, long season. There’s plenty to play for and there will be ups and downs.

“I’m chuffed to bits with the players. They responded really well and put a great effort in.”
