Crewe boss Artell calls for referee chief Allison to resign after Cobblers loss

Crewe manager Dave Artell suggested referee chief David Allison should resign after what he labelled a “disgraceful” performance from official Scott Oldham during his side’s 2-0 defeat to Northampton.

Artell was particularly incensed by the decision not to award Crewe a free-kick in the build-up to Northampton’s first goal as Andy Williams scored in the 18th minute.

Daniel Powell added a late second to help the Cobblers claim their third-straight League Two win and leapfrog Crewe in the process.

Artell said: “When the fourth official is shouting ‘foul, foul, foul’ and the referee then doesn’t give a foul, there’s no point of him being stood there.

“He was disgraceful today, disgraceful. He missed a clear elbow in the last second. It’s just disgraceful and he’ll get a zero from me.

“David Allison, the head of the referees, should have a look at himself because I’m fed up of talking about them.

“On one hand I feel it’s not their fault because they’re part-time, but on other hand I think he should resign because he’s not got any standard.

“That was a second-year referee today and he’s made a horrific, horrific decision for their first goal. There’s not one point to the fourth official (being) stood there if he’s not going to listen to him.

“We get told to let the fourth official concentrate on the game, especially in the immediate vicinity, and that foul was probably 10 yards from him.

“I would say that’s within the immediate vicinity and when he’s shouting ‘foul, foul, foul’ I’d like to think the referee would take his advice, much like when a linesman flags and he always blows up.”

Northampton manager Keith Curle was pleased to grind out a fifth victory in eight games since he took over.

He said: “We won ugly today and it wasn’t the prettiest but we were playing against a team who have a philosophy and sometimes they can make you look awkward.

“I think it’s a case of, at the minute, we’re still putting foundations in place and learning and educating how to win games. They played the football, we won the game.

“I think everyone that took part today played their part in what we tried to do. It’s a squad game and sometimes we looked to nullify them.

“We changed the formation to block up the midfield and it’s a case of being brave and having an understanding that the game goes on for 94, 95 minutes.

“We had some good counter-attacks in the first half and stopped Crewe from having that fluidity.

“We were a little bit too open in the second-half and that was because we didn’t retain possession and we didn’t put the ball into good areas when going forward.”
