Hill likely to turn to experienced players for FA Cup tie with Gateshead

Rochdale boss Keith Hill is likely to turn to his big guns once again for Saturday’s FA Cup first round tie against Gateshead after giving his youngsters a chance in midweek.

Hill made 11 changes for Wednesday night’s 2-2 Checkatrade Trophy draw with Leicester Under-21s – the visitors claimed a bonus point with a 4-3 penalty shoot-out win – five of them being teenagers Juwon Hamzat, Luke Matheson, Florent Hoti, Dan Adshead and Florian Yonsian.

Some members of that quintet will hope to have caught the manager’s eye, as will experienced duo Calvin Andrew and Jim McNulty, who scored Dale’s goals on the night.

Midfielder Olly Rathbone missed Saturday’s 0-0 League One draw with Luton through injury and was replaced by Matty Done.

Gateshead boss Steve Watson has a fully-fit squad from which to select as he looks to repeat last season’s exploits by reaching the second round.

Watson, who played in the 1998 final with Newcastle, saw his National League side lose 5-0 to Luton, who were then drawn to face the Magpies at St James’ Park.

The Heed secured their place in the first round with a 4-0 win at Northern League Dunston.

However, they head for Rochdale having suffered back-to-back league defeats at the hands of Fylde and Wrexham.
