Harry Wheeler reveals half-time ‘rough-up’ helped Maidstone to FA Cup victory

Maidstone boss Harry Wheeler revealed a half-time “rough-up” came before the second-half turnaround which saw his side beat Macclesfield in the first round of the FA Cup.
Ben Stephens had put the Silkmen – who sit bottom of League Two – in front at the break but the Stones came back after the break as Jack Powell’s free-kick and Blair Turgott’s penalty turned the game on its head.
“I am very relieved and really proud of the lads in the end,” said Wheeler.
“(We were) really poor in the first half, we didn’t compete and deserved to be 1-0 down.
“We had a little bit of a rough-up (in the dressing room at half-time) and had a few verbals but sometimes you need that.
“We said the first 10 minutes of the half we need to get a goal, and if we do we can go and win it, so it was a great time to score.”
Meanwhile Macclesfield’s season goes from bad to worse and Neil Howarth – in caretaker charge alongside Danny Whitaker – can find few positives.
“I think only one team wanted to win it more in the second half,” he said.
“We knew exactly what they were going to do and ultimately we’ve not been able to deal with it or stop it.
“(Ben Stephens) is a good player, he’s stepped up to first team football and he’s our best player.
“We’re having to rely on a young player to carry us over the line, and when there aren’t enough players doing it, that is the result you get.”
