Oldham manager Frankie Bunn was relieved to see the Latics tear up the script as they overcame non-league Hampton & Richmond Borough 2-1 in the FA Cup.
The Latics were put through the wringer in front of the TV cameras at the Beveree Stadium in south west London before two late goals saved the day for the visitors.
Chris Dickson’s spot-kick had put Hampton on track for an upset but Rob Hunt levelled late on before Callum Lang got the winner in added time.
“We all knew why the cameras were here,” said Bunn, whose side will go to Maidstone United in the second round.
“They nearly got what they wanted, those headlines, and I’m just grateful to be in the hat for the next round.
“We kept plugging away. We always had momentum. We were always searching for the goals to get back into the game and frankly, we got them.”
After Dickson had put the Beavers ahead from the spot, full-back Hunt levelled after a storming run from Dan Gardner, before Lang fired home in the 94th minute.
Hampton manager Gary McCann said: “It’s very easy for a manager to stand in front of a group of players saying: ‘don’t play the occasion – play the football match’.
“There were 2,800 people there. You’ve got to play the occasion. You’ve got to be able to be brave and expressive, and do the right things at the right times, and I felt we did that.”
