Macclesfield defender Cameron convinced they have quality to survive

Macclesfield’s new signing Nathan Cameron is adamant he has not joined a sinking ship.

The bottom club have had a tortuous return to the division, with Saturday’s 1-0 win at home to Yeovil only their second victory of the League Two campaign.

When Elliott Durrell was felled in the second half, Michael Rose buried the resulting penalty to give the hosts a desperately-needed three points.

And ex-Bury defender Cameron is looking forward to trying to help his new club escape the drop.

“It’s been good here so far,” said Cameron after his second game as a Silkman. “I’ve enjoyed being here, I know the club from my days at Bury, it’s a good club and I’m happy to have been given a chance to play.

“I’ve been out of contract since I left Bury in the summer and I’ve only played a couple of games since March so my legs don’t feel too great today but I’m happy to get 90 minutes in, hopefully I can keep building up my fitness.

“I’m here on a two-month deal and it’s a great opportunity for me to come, play games, hopefully stay in the team and help get us out of this position.

“I knew there are good players here so I think we’re in a bit of a false position, we just need to fix little tweaks here and there, hopefully today’s win can be the start.”

Macclesfield manager Danny Whitaker added: “We needed that win with the position we’re in, it couldn’t have come at a better time, it’s a very, very good result for us.

“There are no easy games in the league but if we keep performing like we did today we’ll get more points and we’ll all go home happy. And we’ll go into the next game in a better frame of mind, which is what we want and what we need.”

While Macclesfield were also toasting their first clean sheet of the year Glovers manager Darren Way admitted his side was feeling the pressure continue to build after one win in 10 league matches.

“I understand the pressure we’re all under at the football club because as a group we built up momentum and success at the start of the season and my players need to live up to that,” he said.

“I feel for the players. We had a goal disallowed from a corner which never should have been disallowed so we just said at half time stick to the game plan, concentrate and don’t concede. We were quite positive at half time.

“Then they got the goal and that changed the game, I’ve just looked at it and it was never a penalty but I don’t want to use it as an excuse.

“We all know where we are in the dressing room, we know we’ve got to take responsibility and I’ll be the first to say that.

“I understand the supporters’ frustrations on the back of two very disappointing defeats so we’re all very frustrated right now.”
