Lowe won’t let Bury get too high as red-hot run continues

Delighted Bury manager Ryan Lowe refused to get too carried away after his side roared to a 4-1 win against Cheltenham.

The in-form Shakers moved into the play-off positions and have now scored 22 goals in their last six league and cup matches, winning five and drawing the other.

Lowe said: “The goals are irrelevant. Although it’s nice to score another four goals, it’s the three points that really count and we won’t be taking anything for granted yet.

“I’d asked for a reaction following the draw at Cambridge on Saturday. We were disappointed on the way home from that game.

“The lads have shown real character tonight, though, and I am more than happy.

“All the lads are eager to play at the moment, and they’re doing the right things both on and off the pitch.

“I’ve just said ‘well done’ to them, they’ve been a good team tonight. We’ve got a good group in there and they’re all full of confidence.

“It’s not rocket science. We’re putting balls into the right areas and we’ve got goalscorers who will find the net.”

Lowe is relishing Sunday’s FA Cup second-round tie at home to League one high-fliers Luton.

He added: “Luton are flying in League One, and they’ve got lots of fantastic players.

“I know Nathan Jones is a really good manager and he’s got his team playing some terrific football.

“It’s going to be a really exciting cup game for the fans.”

The hosts struck first when defender Chris Stokes tapped in from close range.

It was firmly against the run of play when the Robins hit back 11 minutes later, Chris Clements nodding home Jordon Forster’s cross.

Bury regained the lead when Nicky Maynard swept home from 12 yards and Will Aimson almost made it 3-1 just after the restart when he volleyed inches over.

Byron Moore did strike in the 72nd minute, robbing Cheltenham skipper Ben Tozer before tucking home, and Maynard lashed home Bury’s fourth off the underside of the crossbar.

Cheltenham boss Michael Duff acknowledged his team had been second best.

He said: “Bury are a really good side so we knew we were going to be in for a tough game.

“They pass the ball around really well and they’ve got dangerous strikers.

“They just played better than us and were the better team on the night. I can’t have any complaints.

“I’m still happy with how we’ve made progress over the last few weeks. There’s definitely been a shift in mentality among the players.

“I just thought we could have dominated Bury a little more tonight. Yes, they are a top side in this division, but we didn’t move the ball around well enough and we’ve been punished.

“I believe we’re still on the right track despite this result.”
