HORRIFIC scenes unravelled during AEK Athens’ Champions League tie with Ajax, after a fan threw a suspected petrol bomb into the away end.

The game ended 2-0 to Ajax, but none of the attention was on the field.

Before the game even started, an AEK fan appeared to throw a petrol bomb into the away end, which exploded into a flame ball.

Riot police were brought in to try and calm the situation down, but to no avail.

Pictures emerged on social media of fans with blood streaming down their faces being held back by police.

Several players attempted to intervene.

Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt was pictured trying to reason with the fans to calm down so that the game could be played.

Fans had already been segregated by blocks of empty seats, but that was not enough as clashes broke out between the travelling Dutch fans and the Greeks.

No confirmation has been made as of yet regarding whether any fans were arrested.

Before the match, several reports suggested that violence between the two sets of fans had already broken out in the city.

There was speculation online that Panathinaikos fans had managed to get into the game in the Ajax end.

Panathinaikos are AEK’s biggest rivals.

AEK were eliminated from the Champions League after the defeat.

They have lost every game they have played so far, and sit bottom of the group without a point.

Ajax qualified for the knockout round with the win, along with Bayern Munich.

They play against each other in the final round of group stage matches.
