Doncaster boss Grant McCann satisfied with ‘scrappy’ win

Grant McCann believes his Doncaster side demonstrated they have the ability to win games without playing well as they swept past local rivals Scunthorpe.

Goals inside the first 10 minutes from Ben Whiteman and Herbie Kane set Rovers on their way before John Marquis wrapped up the points five minutes from time.

Doncaster failed to maintain their initially high tempo, but McCann was pleased they got the win nevertheless.

“I thought it was a scrappy game really but I think we showed that when we’re not at our best, we can still win,” he said.

“I think it’s the sign of a good team. I thought we were clinical when we got the chances. There weren’t many chances for us and maybe Scunthorpe had more.

“But when we got them we were clinical and I think that is why we got the win.

“I think it’s massive. It probably wasn’t a day for us to be expansive in our play.”

The win was Doncaster’s fourth in succession and helped maintain their push for the play-offs.

“We just need to keep doing what we’re doing,” McCann said. “We’ve got a tough run of games, we really have. I know people are probably looking and thinking we’ve got a lot of teams coming up that are down at the bottom of the table but they’re the toughest games, both mentally and physically.

“But we’ve got a very good changing room that don’t look and think any game is an easy one.

“We’ll let other people think that. We’ll make sure we keep our mindset right to go and win the games.”

Scunthorpe boss Stuart McCall was pleased with the response of his side after conceding twice in the early stages but was left to bemoan “avoidable” goals and more injuries for his patched-together squad that suffered a fifth consecutive defeat.

“I’m fed up of talking about goals that are totally avoidable,” McCall said. “And two more injuries as well. Josh Morris is on crutches after that.

“We’ve had a long chat in the dressing room. It’s not good talking about the two goals we’ve lost at half-time because it’s done.

“I can’t emphasise enough when you’re in the position we are, and going 2-0 down in 10 minutes, you’re thinking it could be five or six.

“But they showed enough. Being honest, I thought if anyone was going to get the goal in the second half it would be us.

“Obviously that didn’t happen and it was another disappointing goal to concede with their third.

“I thought we did enough to win the second half but that’s irrelevant because we’ve lost the game.”
