John Sheridan delighted to see Carlisle return to winning ways

Carlisle manager John Sheridan was relieved to see his team finally produce the goods in front of their own fans following a 4-0 hammering of third-placed Colchester.

Having not won at Brunton Park since November 3, Hallam Hope’s first-half goal set the Cumbrians on their way and Jerry Yates, Jamie Devitt and Danny Grainger made the game safe after the break.

Sheridan said: “It could have been seven or eight because we created lots of chances and it was a great performance.

“It was a very good performance against a team going really well in the league. We were clinical and they were all good goals, none of them lucky.

“It’s brilliant that we’ve done it at home because the fans have stuck by us when results have not been what I want. We are a decent team on our day and should be winning more games.

“We took our chances and should have had more goals. It was excellent football in difficult conditions.”

Sheridan praised goalkeeper Adam Collin for keeping Carlisle level in the first half with a fine save to deny Sammie Szmodics.

“He made a great save at 0-0 and sometimes you need these little bits of fortune,” said Sheridan.

“We have played some games and played better than today, but we always create chances and if you take those chances you have an opportunity to win games.”

Carlisle are now only four points off the play-offs.

“If we play like that we will win more than we lose,” Sheridan said.

“I put out an attack-minded side and wanted them thinking of goals. Our forward players should be scoring more with the chances we create. When everyone if fit and available we have some decent players for this division.”

Colchester head coach John McGreal admitted Carlisle’s performance caught his side off-guard.

He admitted: “We didn’t see that one coming. Carlisle fully deserved their win and were very good. They have had a lot of good results away from home, but not so many at home.

“It’s three points lost, that’s all. It’s an afternoon to forget, but we will regroup. It’s disappointing.

“Our second half was very poor. That’s our worst performance of the season.”
