Matt Taylor talks up Lee Martin after Exeter beat Crewe

Exeter manager Matt Taylor hailed a moment of brilliance from Lee Martin that secured City a 1-0 win over Crewe.

Martin scored the only goal of a tight game, played on a pitch saturated by the recent rain, when he turned and curled a sensational shot across goal and into the top corner from 25 yards.

The strike gave seventh-placed Exeter their first League Two win since October 13.

“Full credit to the boys. We got a clean sheet and a moment of real quality with the goal has won us that game,” Taylor said.

“It was on his weaker foot and I haven’t seen that too often! On the training ground, he is noted for his right-footed finishing.

“Lee Martin is someone that has had to be patient. He’s been frustrated at times and when he has played, he has had half chances and half opportunities, things haven’t quite gone his way.

“I said to the group at the start of the week I wanted a performance based on energy and if you select a team based on energy, then you have Lee Martin in your team. He was everywhere and I thought he was excellent.

“Full credit to all the ground staff who managed to get this game on and credit to Crewe as well because they wanted to play – we wanted to play – and we were pushing the referee as much as we possibly could because we wanted to play football at the end of the day.”

Crewe pressed for an equaliser in the second half but Exeter defended well, limiting the Railwaymen to few opportunities.

However, they should have levelled when Shaun Miller rounded home goalkeeper Christy Pym, but with the goal at his mercy, he smashed his shot against the top of the crossbar to let Exeter off the hook.

“It is the same old story I’m afraid. I have just said that to the players,” said Crewe boss David Artell afterwards.

“It has been a pattern for a while and that has continued today.

“The chance Shaun had was an unbelievable move, the best move of the whole game. Shaun has done everything right and then he has whacked it against the bar. We stand here with no points instead of one.

“I am fed up standing here saying the same old thing. It is not as though we are not creating chances, but you have to take the chances when they come along.

“We deserved something from the game, most definitely, especially second half, but we have missed an open goal to get a point.

“We have had plenty of balls flashed across their box without a final touch. We deserved a point at least, but we are stood here with none.”
