Exeter boss Matt Taylor hails hat-trick hero Jayden Stockley

Exeter boss Matt Taylor paid tribute to his side’s character after Jayden Stockley bagged a hat-trick in their 3-2 comeback win at Oldham.

Stockley has now scored 14 league goals this season and is in demand ahead of the January transfer window, but Taylor insisted the victory was down to a determined team effort.

Oldham took a 12th-minute lead through Sam Surridge’s far-post header before Stockley glanced in from a corner to make it level at half-time.

The hosts were back in front when Callum Lang fired the ball home from a tough angle, but Stockley produced a superb first-time finish after 64 minutes and soon completed his treble by heading in a Lee Holmes cross.

Oldham could have grabbed a late point and were furious about their penalty appeals being waved aside after a challenge on Jordan Lyden.

Exeter held on for back-to-back victories and Taylor said: “It was a tough watch at times, but it was a really good game in terms of the attacking football on show.

“You have to question the defensive side because you expect to be more comfortable when you score three away from home, but I’m so pleased to come out on top.

“We have come from behind twice, which shows a lot of character, and in the last half-hour we were the better team.

“Maybe we got a bit of luck with an Oldham penalty appeal, but we always had an attacking threat.

“Obviously Jayden scored his hat-trick, but it was about a strong team performance and we are still building along the way.

“We can’t keep giving away cheap goals because you’ve got to work hard to score at the other end, but it’s a reward for the fans sticking with us and hopefully it’s an early Christmas present.”

The defeat was Oldham’s first in seven league matches and manager Frankie Bunn said: “We started really well and could have been two up if we had taken our chances.

“We let them back into it by switching off at a set-play and then it became end-to-end like a game of basketball.

“We weren’t as tight as I would like, especially in midfield. Exeter scored during a purple patch and after that they grew in confidence.

“They are a good side who haven’t been out of the top seven since August, but our defending on the day was my biggest disappointment.

“In training we worked on set-plays and the positions Jayden Stockley takes up in the box, but we didn’t pick him up for the first goal.

“We knew he was the dangerman and he’s the best centre-forward I’ve seen in our league this season, but we had to do better in dealing with that.”
