Gateshead showed their Vanarama National play-off credentials with a 2-1 win over north-east rivals Hartlepool at the Gateshead International Stadium.
Both sides had great chances to open the scoring in a frantic start before Luke Armstrong’s effort from the edge of the penalty area somehow made its way past Scott Loach in the 13th minute to give the hosts the lead.
Robbie Tinkler rattled the crossbar from range as the home side looked to double their advantage and the Gateshead fans did not have to wait long to be celebrating once more as Middlesbrough loan forward Armstrong grabbed his 10th league goal of the season just after the half-hour mark.
Hartlepool rallied to get back in the game and went close through Liam Noble, Conor Newton and Niko Muir before they were given a lifeline as Gateshead midfielder Tom White was shown a straight red card with six minutes left, before Pools were awarded a penalty three minutes later.
Noble converted to set up a tense finish, and Hartlepool almost pulled off a great comeback but Kenton Richardson hit the woodwork late as Gateshead held on.
