Wes Thomas’ second-half strike gives Grimsby victory

Grimsby continued their charge up the Sky Bet League Two table with a 1-0 victory at Port Vale.
Wes Thomas won it with a wonderful, swerving strike that gave the Mariners their first win on the road since early October.
Chances were few and far between in the first half at Vale Park.
However, it was Vale who looked the most likely to score, with Luke Hannant dragging wide from inside the box.
Upon the restart, home goalkeeper Scott Brown raced out to deny Thomas while, at the other end, similar action was needed from James McKeown, with substitute Ben Whitfield lurking.
Whitfield also struck the post shortly after his introduction.
Vale were having a spell at that point, but Grimsby looked a threat on the counter, which they ultimately proved when Thomas cut inside and fired an unstoppable effort into the top corner.
The home side pushed and probed for a way back into the game, but having fallen behind when on top, they were never able to recover.
