Josh Maja struck his 14th goal of the season to preserve Sunderland’s unbeaten record at the Stadium of Light to secure a 1-1 draw with Shrewsbury Town in League One.
The Shrews, despite winning just one of their last 17 games away from home, battled throughout to ensure they did not leave Wearside empty-handed.
Shrewsbury, fighting to climb clear of the relegation zone, took the lead after half an hour when defender Luke Waterfall glanced a header from 12 yards off Greg Docherty’s free-kick.
Sunderland, unable to close the gap to the top two, pulled a goal back a minute before the break when Maja’s downward header from close-range hit the net after Bryan Oviedo’s fine run and cross.
That was enough to extend Sunderland’s unbeaten home record to 12 matches in the third tier.
Neither side really created clear-cut chances to win the game in the closing stages even though Sunderland goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin did well to stop Jack Baldwin’s from scoring an own goal, and Mat Sadler cleared off the line at the other end.
