Matt Taylor rues bad defending after 10-man Grimsby win at Exeter

Exeter manager Matt Taylor could not hide his disappointment at his side’s poor defending as they lost 2-1 at home to 10-man Grimsby.

The away side prevailed with goals from Martyn Woolford and Mitchell Rose despite them playing with 10 men since Alex Whitmore’s 51st-minute dismissal.

Jayden Stockley did find a way past the inspired Mariners goalkeeper James McKeown as Exeter briefly equalised with 12 minutes left but Rose struck the winner from the spot two minutes later.

“I keep saying it, but we can’t keep giving away soft goals,” Taylor said. “It’s the same points that we keep talking about all season. It’s a lack of control in our defending on two occasions and it has cost us again.

“They only got close to our goal on two occasions, one was a penalty. We needed some control when we got the equaliser, but the players were so desperate to go on and win the game and we needed to reset and go again and we didn’t do that.

“The first was just a direct ball into our box, which again, we have spoken about all season and we haven’t dealt with it.

“You have to give credit to them and their goalkeeper, they had clearances off the line, but I didn’t feel we hit their goal line enough.

“Although we created enough chances to win the game, they were all at a saveable or blockable height.

“Having said that, when you create 30 chances and hit the target as often as we did, then you expect to win that game.”

Grimsby boss Michael Jolley hailed the efforts of his team after they recorded a fourth straight win to move six points behind their seventh-placed opponents in Sky Bet League Two.

“It was a great win and that performance said everything about us in terms of, not so much the football, but more the way we went about it to defend for the best part of 45 minutes with 10 men,” he said.

“Our keeper was incredible today and in front of him everyone put their bodies on the line to try and make blocks and keep the ball out of our net. That says a lot about the type of people we have got in our dressing room.

“People can see we have got good lads that give everything they have got. We have got a terrific group of lads who give everything every time they step across the line. They make mistakes and they are not perfect but their intentions are always to try and play well for Grimsby Town.

“Today was just a magnificent performance and a great result.”
