John Sheridan insists Carlisle will remain grounded despite recent winning form

Carlisle boss John Sheridan says his side will take it “one game at a time” after they climbed into the League Two play-offs with a fifth straight win at Morecambe.

It has been a superb festive period for the Cumbrians, who made it 15 points from 15 with two stunning strikes from Jamie Devitt and Jack Sowerby to give them a flying start to the new year.

Former Morecambe favourite Devitt broke the deadlock with a stunning goal on 15 minutes as he turned sharply on the edge of the area and volleyed superbly over Mark Halstead with a shot that dipped wickedly under the crossbar.

Morecambe hit back and had a greater share of the possession with Adam Collin forced into good saves from Jordan Cranston, Rhys Oates and Carlos Mendes-Gomes before the Cumbrians doubled their advantage with 14 minutes to go.

In a goal that was almost a carbon copy of the first, Sowerby latched on to a throw-in from the left before cutting inside and unleashing an unstoppable shot past Mark Halstead from 20 yards to seal victory.

“The results over Christmas have put us in a good position but there is still a long way to go and we are taking things one game at a time,” Sheridan said.

“The games have come thick and fast but we have put in some really good displays at the right time to put ourselves right in the mix.

“This was always going to be a difficult derby game against a side that are always tough to beat but we managed it really well. It was a bit ugly at times on a difficult pitch, but we defended really well and scored two brilliant goals to get the points.

“They had a good chance in the first minute of the game but they didn’t really trouble us after that. Jamie Devitt put us ahead with a great strike matched by Jack Sowerby in the second half and the only disappointment for me was that we didn’t get any more goals.

“We now have a really big game against Mansfield coming up and that is our focus of attention now.”

Morecambe manager Jim Bentley believed the game typified his side’s season.

“There was absolutely nothing in the game but we were done by two long-range strikes which is the story of our season really,” Bentley said.

“They will no doubt say they were brilliant goals but looking at it defensively they were both poor goals to give away as they were replica goals. Both came from throw-ins and both came from their players losing their markers and getting into good positions to shoot.

“In the end, they were the only shots our keeper had to save all game and their goalkeeper was by far the busier but we didn’t really have the edge where we needed it.

“It has been the same all season really. We have been in every game we have played bar a couple and our football has been decent all season but we just need to do better in the final third and turn possession into goals.”
