Jose Mourinho has described the prospect of returning to either Real Madrid or Inter Milan as a ‘tremendous honour.’

The former Manchester United manager has been linked with several of his former clubs – most prominently Real Madrid – after leaving Old Trafford in December.

Mourinho was replaced at United by Ole Gunnar Solksjaer – on a caretaker basis – and is now free to take a new job having agreed a compensation package.

He has already rejected an approach from the first side he ever managed, Benfica, and is now reportedly the subject of interest from Real Madrid.

"They are things that are said and I will not feed,” Mourinho told Record in Portugal when asked about interest from his old employers.

"When a coach or a player, he comes back, it means we did something positive. I felt it when I returned to Chelsea.

At Manchester United, Jose Mourinho couldn’t compete against the best in England

"When a professional returns or is invited to return to a club it is a tremendous honour.

"It’s not a gamble in the dark, the clubs are trying to hire a player or a coach they know, they’ve already been there, and if they invite you it’s because they know the value of the person.”

Santiago Solari is Real Madrid’s current manager, after the sacking of Julen Lopetegui earlier this season, but they are struggling in fifth place, ten points behind leaders Barcelona.

As a result, Real president Florentino Perez now wants Mourinho back having first appointed him in 2010.

Under Jose, Real won the Copa del Rey and beat Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering Barcelona side to La Liga glory in 2012.

Mourinho left the following season, having reportedly upset a number of players in the changing room, though Perez never wanted him to go.
