Pete Wild hails Oldham’s never-say-die attitude after Forest Green stalemate

Caretaker manager Pete Wild praised Oldham’s never-say-die attitude after they dug deep to earn a goalless hard-fought League Two draw at home to Forest Green Rovers.

Goalkeeper Daniel Iversen pulled off a string of fine saves as the Latics followed up their FA Cup victory at Premier League Fulham by making it four games unbeaten under Wild.

Forest Green almost scored through Tahvon Campbell before Reece Brown’s powerful shot hit both the bar and the post.

Iversen, on loan from Leicester, saved from George Williams on three separate occasions and also tipped out former Oldham midfielder Carl Winchester’s low drive.

The home side created openings of their own and could have snatched all three points with Gevaro Nepomuceno’s late piledriver from 25 yards.

Wild said: “We started the game slowly and you could see in the warm-up and the dressing room that it was going to happen, so we got into the players before kick-off.

“We got some luck when Forest Green hit the woodwork, but after that it was more long-range shots than clear-cut chances.

“For the first 20 minutes we were over cautious and I will put my hands up for that, but it was two teams in good runs of form.

“What this group of players will always give you is resilience and never-say-die attitude. They have done it in all four games I have been in charge.

“League Two is an unforgiving place and you have to be up for every game. If we do that, we’ve always got a chance.

“I speak to the owner every day and we will just have to see if I’m still on the touchline at Macclesfield next week but, if I am, I’ll keep enjoying it.”

Forest Green have now gone six games without defeat and manager Mark Cooper said: “You can’t do too much more without putting the ball in the net.

“We created some brilliant chances but just didn’t have our shooting boots on today.

“We’ve been talking about having an embarrassment of riches up front and then we’ve drawn a blank, but I had told my defenders I wanted to talk about a clean sheet as well.

“Sometimes you have to settle for a draw. We deserved to win the game, but you’ve got to score when you make that many chances.

“Not many teams come to Oldham and win, but we dominated the first half and should have put the game to bed.

“We played really well for that first half, and we did it against a really good team, but we had to score.

“Oldham paid us a lot of respect with the way they played. Teams are scared to come at us, but credit to them for hanging on for a point.”
