The Italian striker is on loan at Milan from Juventus, but has been linked with a permanent transfer to the blues.

Chelsea are reportedly ready to pay top dollar for the forward, as they prepare to sell misfiring Alvaro Morata.

Having notched six goals in 15 Serie A games so far this season, Higuain is reportedly keen for a link-up with Maurizio Sarri.

Higuain played under Sarri during his time at Napoli, and has now told his current boss Gattuso that he wants a reunion with the Italian.

Gattuso played Higuain against Sampdoria in the the Coppa Italia on Saturday, and afterwards spoke about his future.

"When a player makes choices, it’s difficult to convince him otherwise,” he said, per Football Italia. “One can try.”

"We have a very honest relationship, we say things to people’s faces.

"There is great honesty.

"At this moment, he is a Milan player and we’re holding on tight.

"I don’t know what will happen.

"We are honest with each other and I want him to maintain this attitude, which has never been lacking thus far.

"I’ve talked to him a great deal, but it’s hard to give advice, because the career of a player only lasts 13-14 years.

"It’s his mind, not mine. The most important thing is to talk as men, look each other in the eyes and speak the truth.”

Gattuso also joked that if it was up to him, Higuain wouldn’t be leaving.

"I haven’t figured out what Higuain is unhappy with, because I see him look content and involved in the locker room atmosphere. We’ll see what happens,” he added.

"If it was up to me, I’d invite him to my house, lock him in a room and throw him food every two to three hours. Unfortunately, I can't do that.”
