Paul Tisdale fears time is running out for MK Dons’ promotion push after defeat

MK Dons manager Paul Tisdale admitted he fears time might be running out for his side to challenge for promotion after falling to another defeat at Grimsby.
Wes Thomas’ first-half goal was enough to give the hosts their first victory of 2019 at Blundell Park, despite falling to 10 men when Harry Davis saw red for pulling down Kieran Agard on the edge of the penalty area.
The defeat is the Dons’ fifth in their last seven Sky Bet League Two games as they sit six points off the automatic promotion places, while their place in the top seven looks less secure than it did before the new year.
On his side’s defeat, Tisdale said: “It was difficult and frustrating. We’ve got to move on, but I’m not dismissing the fact we’ve lost three points and I’m really unhappy about it.
“It was a terribly frustrating afternoon and the players committed to everything I asked them to do. We just didn’t create enough chances off the back of it.
“It’s something I’ve got to look at – it’s happened a couple of times so I’ll look at it myself and see how we go about those scenarios again.
“Will we sort these scenarios out? Yes, I think we will. My major concern is time and games ticking away.
“I have every confidence in them, me and my colleagues to find the answers, but at the moment it’s a time issue with how many points are still at stake this season. We’re on it, but that doesn’t make it any easier.”
For Grimsby boss Michael Jolley, a first win of the year came as a relief with his side also scoring their first goal since December 29.
And despite a second red card in three games, the Mariners boss paid tribute to his players’ efforts in holding onto the victory.
“We’ve had several situations of adversity recently and we’re certainly getting accustomed to playing with 10 players on the pitch,” Jolley said.
“I was really happy with how we started the game when it was 11 versus 11. I thought we were the better side, and I thought we deservedly went in front.
“Obviously the red card changes everything in the game, but the way we worked, the way we defended, the way we stuck in there and fought to get the three points was tremendous.”
On the red card, Jolley added: “I think it probably was a red card on the basis that you can make the argument he (Davis) was the last defender.
“Joe Grayson was coming around to cover, although I don’t know whether he was going to get there or not. I understand why he’s been sent off, but it’s not a clear one.”
