Newport bounce back from FA Cup exit

Jamille Matt scored a first-half double as Newport County claimed a 4-1 victory at Meadow Lane to reignite their fading play-off hopes and deepen Notts County’s relegation worries.
Newport were beaten 4-1 by Manchester City in Saturday’s FA Cup fifth-round clash but they were just too good for League Two’s bottom club.
Defender Fraser Franks returned to the starting XI in the only change from Saturday and promptly lashed home the opening goal in the ninth minute after great work from Robbie Willmott on the left.
Kane Hemmings responded immediately for the hosts, heading home an equaliser 59 seconds later.
But the visitors were not to be denied, with Matt heading them back in front in the 15th minute and then adding his second and the Exiles’ third with an acrobatic bicycle kick 12 minutes before the interval.
Matt then turned provider two minutes after the break with a cross for Padraig Amond to head in his 20th of the season and close out the result beyond any doubt for Michael Flynn’s men.
