United were looking down and out under Mourinho earlier in the season.

There were a multitude of problems both on and off the pitch as results and performances continued to demise.

Several key players reportedly had problems with the Portuguese coach, including Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial and Alexis Sanchez.

There were concerns that they would angle for moves away, with contract talks with Martial in particular coming to a standstill.

United were floundering in sixth at the time of Mourinho’s dismissal, 11 points off the top four after Liverpool dismantled them 3-1 at Anfield in December.

That game spelled the end for Mourinho, who was sacked two days after in a 10-minute meeting with Ed Woodward.

But according to ESPN, the reason behind his dismissal was for the absence of any Champions League insurance.

Mourinho struggled at United in 2017, finishing sixth in the Premier League.

But their triumph in the Europa League meant they progressed to the Champions League anyway.

This year, the chances of winning the European competition is minimal after drawing Paris St-Germain in the first knockout round.

Subsequently, Mourinho was also axed a day after the draw on December 17.

Meanwhile, United have flourished under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - who has been given the reins until the end of the season.

The Norwegian has emerged as the favourite to land the full-time job ahead of Mauricio Pochettino and Zinedine Zidane.

United are unbeaten in the Premier League under Solskjaer as well as beating Arsenal and Chelsea in the FA Cup.
