Darren Way praises Ryan Seager after his maiden Yeovil goal sees off Morecambe

Darren Way hailed Ryan Seager’s “fantastic” late winner after Yeovil beat fellow strugglers Morecambe 3-2.

Yeovil-born Seager’s first goal for the club since he joined in January – a curling effort from 25 yards in the 87th minute – was enough to secure all three points for the hosts.

“What a fantastic goal,” said Glovers manager Way. “To come on and get a winner like that for your hometown club, it shows the football club are going in the right direction. The supporters have got players to get behind.”

Richie Bennett gave Morecambe a first-half lead but Tristan Abrahams scored two goals in four minutes to put Yeovil ahead before Steven Old levelled things up at 2-2.

Way brought Seager off the bench and six minutes later the substitute had scored.

“I was open to criticism there when we made the subs but they made a great impact,” he continued.

“The bench made a real positive impact and that’s what you could see towards the end of the game.

“That’s the way we play when teams are a bit tired and throwing numbers forward. That’s what we want, when we can hit teams on the counter-attack. That was why we ended up with the chances.

“The players kept fighting. The supporters got behind the players and that’s what we’ve tried to get for some time.”

Shrimps boss Jim Bentley felt his side deserved something from the game, instead seeing their hosts leapfrog them near the bottom of the table.

“I’m very disappointed,” Bentley said.

“On another day we should have been out of sight. We’ve got to defend better but that’s been a little bit of an Achilles heel for us.

“At the other end we’ve scored two but should have scored a lot more. We lose by the odd goal which seems to be the story of our season. Overall we probably deserved a bit more.

“But we had a severe wobble as a team and let them back into it and they had a few chances, threw caution to the wind and gambled a little bit to try and get that next goal and that’s what they did.

“We did great to get ourselves back on level terms but then the third goal is a great strike by the lad, but it’s a massive handball for me in the lead up to it. That’s the type of thing you need to go for you.

“That’s talking about officials, but if we do our job defensively – especially for the first two goals – we would be walking away with three points today and the table looks a lot more rosy.”
