Former Manchester United manager David Moyes has opened up on just how close he came to coaxing a trio of star names to Old Trafford, during his time in charge at the club.

Disastrous United spell

Scottish tactician Moyes was the man tasked with replacing Sir Alex Ferguson at United in the summer of 2013.

The former Everton boss was handed a 6-year contract with the Red Devils, with Moyes having been expected to guide the Manchester giants forward into a new era.

However, what subsequently unfolded during the Scot's solitary campaign at Old Trafford proved nothing short of a disaster.

As such, amid a dismal season, with United having sat in 7th-place in the Premier League table, a full 13 points adrift of 4th-placed Arsenal, Moyes was sacked by the Red Devils hierarchy on the 22nd of April 2014.

His stint in charge in Manchester stood as the 3rd-shortest in the club's history.

'Cesc Fabregas was very close'

As such, during an interview with beIN Sports last night, Moyes was inevitably questioned on his disappointing spell on the bench at Old Trafford.

The 55-year-old spoke openly and honestly regarding a whole range of topics, with the most interesting having concerned United's transfer dealings during his time with the club.

Moyes' sole signing of the 2013 summer transfer window came as Everton powerhouse Marouane Fellaini.

However, the former West Ham boss has confirmed that he was, at different points, confident of securing the signatures of a trio of further international stars, in the form of Gareth Bale, Cesc Fabregas and Toni Kroos:

Marouane Fellaini was to be part of a group of players to come in.'

'By the time we got to the end of the transfer window, we always thought we had a chance of getting Gareth Bale.'

'We hoped we could talk him out of going to Real Madrid because it was already half done.'

'We had offered more money, we tried to entice him. We did [have a helicopter ready] and we tried.'

'Cesc Fabregas was very close. I spoke to him and hoped to bring him from Barcelona.'

'I had met Toni Kroos, during the season, and agreed he would come to Man United before he went to Real Madrid but somewhere in there I lost my job and it meant that Toni went elsewhere.'

'But this is management and we all have lots of hard-luck stories.'
