United bosses are set to renew their interest in the Leicester defender after failing to lure him to Old Trafford last summer.

Caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has urged United to sign Maguire so he can build his defence around the 26-year-old.

It is the strongest sign yet that Solskjaer will be appointed permanent manager before the end of this season.

United were interested in Maguire following his exploits at the World Cup in Russia last summer.

He emerged as one the stars of England’s stunning run to the semi-finals before losing to Croatia in Moscow.

At the time, executive vice chairman Ed Woodward let it be known United were not prepared to meet the Foxes’ asking price.

But the truth was Maguire was not willing to desert the Foxes so soon after joining them from Hull in a £17m deal just 12 months earlier.

Now it has emerged Maguire is open to a switch to United and has let it be known a deal can be done.

Man Utd's pursuit of Harry Maguire comes amid news that:

He wants to be challenging for trophies and playing in Europe on a regular basis.

Maguire also knows he can double his wages at Old Trafford with a deal worth around £140,000-a-week.

He signed a new contract with the Foxes in September aimed at keeping him at the King Power Stadium until June 2023.

But the Foxes knew clubs like United would come back in for Maguire and that tying him to a long-term deal would strengthen their position when it came to negotiating a transfer fee.

News that United are ready to make a fresh bid to sign Maguire is ominous for the likes of Eric Bailly and Marcos Rojo.

Both have been out of the picture at Old Trafford and it is understood United are willing to sell them in the summer.
