Ryan Lowe criticises ‘stupid’ Danny Mayor over sending off

Bury manager Ryan Lowe criticised Danny Mayor for a “stupid” red-card offence in the 3-1 defeat to Swindon.

Mayor was sent off for an angry shove in response to Canice Carroll’s challenge as Kaiyne Woolery’s brace helped Town end Bury’s unbeaten run at 14 League Two games.

The midfielder will now miss three matches through suspension and Lowe said: “It was stupid from Danny. We’ll deal with it, though.

“In fact we’ve already dealt with it. He’s apologised to the lads in the dressing room.

“He does get kicked a lot because of the way he plays, but we won’t be appealing the decision. You can’t react in the way he did.”

Swindon struck first when a weak header back to the keeper by Callum McFadzean was pounced upon by Woolery, who smashed past Joe Murphy.

Bury’s Adam Thompson headed Nicky Adams’ corner-kick against the crossbar, before Jay O’Shea sprinted down the left and crossed for Nicky Maynard to tap home his 20th goal of the season.

O’Shea saw his superb free-kick thump the crossbar before at the other end Woolery made it 2-1 to Richie Wellens’ side, battling his way past Scott Wharton and Thompson before firing in.

Mayor saw red soon after and Theo Robinson tapped home Woolery’s cross late on to round off Swindon’s win.

Lowe added: “Fair play to Swindon and their manager Richie, they capitalised on our mistakes and scored some decent goals.

“I am disappointed more than frustrated I suppose.

“Again I have to pay lots of respect to Swindon, though. They’ve done to us what we’ve been doing to other teams in recent months.

“I guess you could call it a reality check, in a good way. They got about us and forced us into mistakes.”

Delighted Swindon boss Wellens saluted a hugely impressive performance from his side.

The Robins kept their own play-off bid well and truly alive thanks to a well-deserved fifth win in nine games at Gigg Lane.

Wellens said: “I hope Bury go up, I really do because I like Ryan Lowe, he’s a great manager.

“But we could have won that game much more comfortably.

“I think they are the league’s top goalscorers this season, but we could and probably should have had seven or eight today.

“We missed chances, there were lots of ricochets in and around their box, and we hit the post.

“We’re growing really well as a team. Players are starting to take things on board now and we’re putting in the performances I know they are capable of. We saw it at Morecambe last week and here at Bury.

“We’re still chasing. We’ve got Yeovil next and there’s no easy games in this division.

“We’ve not cracked anything yet. There’s still a lot of hard work to get through between now and the end of the season.”
