CHELSEA defender David Luiz will stay at Stamford Bridge until 2021 after signing a new two-year deal.

But it seems that the majority of Blues fans are less than enamoured with the decision.

Luiz, who has made 246 Chelsea appearances over two spells, recently celebrated his 32nd birthday.

Maurizio Sarri has brought him back into the fold this season after Antonio Conte relegated him to the bench last year.

The Brazilian has helped guide Chelsea to the Europa League final, where the club will face Arsenal after knocking out Eintracht Frankfurt.

"I am so happy to be here and to have this opportunity to stay," Luiz said in a statement.

"I love this club and I still have the ambition of a young player.

"It means a lot to reach another European final, and we still have the opportunity to finish in the top three of the Premier League this season. I will continue to try to do my best to help the team."

But Chelsea fans criticised the club's decision to rely on a defender who is arguably past his best, rather than give younger squad players a chance.

"It's another stupid decision in a long line of stupid decisions by the board to give David Luiz a 2 year deal," stated one a fan on Twitter.

"Just like the 5 and 4 year deals given to Alonso and Azpilicueta recently."

"This is priceless comedy," added another fan. "It means 2 years of laughing at Chelsea at the back..."

Another thinks the Luiz decision will benefit his opponents, writing: "That’s good news for all the premiership strikers lol."

Chelsea are banned from signing players until the end of January 2020, and with that in mind, there were some fans who saw sense in the contract extension.

"Great decision," tweeted one Blue. "Keep in mind that we have an active ban.

"With Rudiger's twisted knee, and the unpredictability of other players, We dont have many options considering another injury occurs.

"Plus Luiz has been thru it all with us. Won the most important trophy there is to win."
