MANCHESTER UNITED transfer target Mats Hummels turned down a move to Old Trafford from Bayern Munich for a return to Borussia Dortmund - despite being offered more money by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Hummels turn down a move to Manchester United because he wants to play Champions League football, according to German news outlet Bild.

Instead, he chose to move back to Dortmund from Bayern, despite being offered a higher salary at Old Trafford.

United failed to qualify for Europe’s elite competition next season, as they finished sixth in the Premier League.

Dortmund bought Hummels for around £34m, as the Black and Yellows aim to impress in the Champions League and Bundesliga next season.

The 30-year-old’s career continues to zigzag between the two German giants.

He started out in the Bayern academy, before graduating to the first time.

He was then sent on loan to Dortmund in 2008, before joining them permanently the following year.

The Germany international moved back to Bayern in 2016, having spent seven years in Dortmund.

Claims that United offered Hummels more money than Dortmund are surprising, given their new transfer policy.

Solskjaer is trying to overhaul his squad by bringing in a number of talented young players.

Their previous policy of spending big money on world class players has failed since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.

Alexis Sanchez is on a mammoth £500,000-a-week contract at United, but has scored twice in his last 27 appearances.

Meanwhile, the club’s only signing so far this summer has been Daniel James.

The 21-year-old was bought from Swansea for an initial £15m.

“Daniel is an exciting young winger with lots of skills, vision, exceptional pace and a good work ethic,” said Solskjaer.

“This is the perfect environment for Daniel to continue his development.”
