Liverpool ace Simon Mignolet makes decision on Anfield future

The Reds expect the Belgium keeper to remain at Anfield after impressing Kop boss Jurgen Klopp with his team-first attitude.

Mignolet, 31, lost the No. 1 jersey at Anfield to Loris Karius in the 2017-18 campaign before the Reds signed Alisson last summer in a £65m deal from Roma.

That left the former Sunderland shot stopper warming the bench for most of the 2018-19 season that saw the Reds claim Champions League glory.

He made just two appearances for Liverpool – in a 2-1 League Cup defeat by Chelsea and a FA Cup loss against Wolves.

But Klopp and goalkeeping coach John Achterberg have been impressed by how Mignolet has dealt with the situation.

There has been no sulking from Mignolet, who has been a big help to Alisson settling into life at Anfield.

He has played the role of understudy unselfishly and ensured the club's new No. 1 was properly prepared for every game.

His bond with Alisson was made clear when Mignolet darted onto the pitch to celebrate with the Brazilian after the Reds beat Tottenham to claim a sixth European Cup earlier this month.

Mignolet has two years left on the long-term contract he signed in 2016.

And the £9m signing from Sunderland could now see out that deal.

The only way his position will change is if Liverpool receive a big offer for the keeper.

They also would not stand in his way if a good move became available for Mignolet to play regularly at a high level.
