LYON have sensationally demanded £72million for Tanguy Ndombele after rejecting Tottenham's £40m opening transfer bid.

Mauricio Pochettino's side had thought they were closing in on the capture of the 22-year-old, but the French side are standing firm over their valuation.

The midfielder, who has also been linked to Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain, had even been given a tour of Spurs' training ground.

Lyon's signing of Brazilian Jean Lucas, 21, from Flamengo was thought to have paved the way for Ndombele's move but president Jean-Michel Aulas has been quick to confirm that things are far from a done deal.

Speaking on RMC, he said: "If I wait another eight days, it will be €80million (£72m).

"Tottenham made us an opening offer worth €45m (£40m). Then, we discussed more. Nothing is done, I can assure you. We are not in a hurry either.

"Tanguy has shown his qualities with the French national team. He is one of our best players. How much is he worth? I do not know, but not just €45m."

Spurs, who have not made a single signing in the previous two transfer windows, have been monitoring Ndombele since he burst on to the scene at minnows Amiens.

He then joined Lyon on loan in 2017 before making the move permanent.

The French international impressed in his 33 league appearances as they finished third last season to qualify for the Champions League.

Spurs are also closing in on Leeds winger Jack Clarke, 18, who is having a medical at the club ahead of an £8.5m switch.

While there is strong interest in teenage French centre-back William Saliba, who is also a target for rivals Arsenal.

Real Madrid’s Dani Ceballos is also being looked at as a potential replacement for contract rebel Christian Eriksen.
