Petr Cech has urged Chelsea to appoint a manager this week amid Frank Lampard links

Chelsea were granted permission to speak to Lampard last week by Derby, and have offered their former midfielder and record goalscorer a three year deal worth around £4million a year.

But the details of the whole deal have yet to be finalised, with Lampard wanting to bring at least three coaching staff to Stamford Bridge with him, and negotiations were still ongoing over the weekend.

But former goalkeeper Cech, appointed as Chelsea's new technical and performance advisor last week after retiring as a player with Arsenal at the end of the season, said: "The situation is open, Frank is one of the candidates.

"We still have several days before the first team starts preparing. We would like to resolve the issue of the coach."

Most of Chelsea's players return later this week, and Cech added: "The first thing is to choose the coach.

"This will affect future work. The trainer will have his ideas. The Club is likely to have a ban on transfers, so we will have to take from our resources.

"Some players have left. The idea is that I will be with the first team. I have the opportunity to follow the development of the preparations.

"We have a tour in Japan, among others, in pre-season, where we will play Barcelona. I could consult with all the candidates - they know my ideas."

Lampard, 41, still has two years of his Derby contract to run, and is expected to report back to their Moor Farm training base on Monday when the Championship club's players return for pre-season.

As of Sunday night, most of the club's players were in the dark as to whether the man who led them to the play off final in May would be there or not.

Lampard wants to bring assistant manager and former Chelsea Under 18 coach Jody Morris with him, as well as first team coach Chris Jones and goalkeeping coach Shay Given – and Derby want compensation for their contracts as well.

Chelsea are currently subject to a two-window Fifa transfer ban for breaking rules over signing young foreign players.

They have appealed, but not asked for the ban to be frozen.

Derby though are confident the uncertainty will not have a major effect on the start of their pre-season, with the first couple of days back mainly about fitness and assessing what shape the players are in, not coaching or tactical work.

Former Dutch star Phillip Cocu, who has managed PSV Eindhoven and Galatasaray, has emerged as a as a candidate to succeed Lampard.

Ex-Chelsea midfielder Claude Makelele, who could also return to the club as part of Lampard's staff.

He said: "I'm happy for this idea of the club to bring back a legend. He's ready. He knows what is needed to bring success to the club.

"Frank is someone who is very professional, he focuses on details. I'm sure he will be a great manager for Chelsea."

Meanwhile defender Gary Cahill, whose Chelsea contract ran out last night, is a target for Arsenal, West Ham, and former club Aston Villa.
