Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp reveals when he could quit Anfield as chiefs fear sabbatical

Jurgen Klopp is currently under contract at Anfield until 2022 after signing a six-year extension in July 2016, but Liverpool are keen to tie him down beyond then.

The German led Liverpool to Champions League glory last term to end the club's seven-year wait for silverware.

The Reds also recorded their best ever Premier League points tally as they accrued 97 points, just missing out on a first title since 1990 with Manchester City claiming one more to win the league.

But Liverpool have enjoyed immense progress under Klopp, with the 52-year-old establishing the Merseyside outfit as City's biggest challengers just four years after the club finished eighth in the tactician's first season in England.

ESPN claim Liverpool are fearful that Klopp could opt to take a sabbatical rather than sign another contract extension.

The former Borussia Dortmund coach is said to have discussed his long-term future with his family but has yet to discuss with Liverpool chiefs what he plans to do after 2022.

Liverpool face Dortmund in a pre-season friendly on Friday night in Indiana as part of their pre-season tour of the United States and ahead of that clash, captain Jordan Henderson was asked about the impact Klopp has had on the squad in light of their European Cup success in particular.

The midfielder hailed Klopp as both "a special person and a special manager" and went on to add: "Hopefully he can stay here for a very long time."

Klopp was then asked about his future himself after he sat down in front of a raft of reporters but refused to give too much away, though insists he fully expects to see out his current contract having been linked to Real Madrid and Bayern Munich in recent years.

"Wow! I don't think a lot of people get asked that question three years before the contract is expiring," he said.

"We will see. Why should we think about this?

"At least three years - that's the answer. At least three years."

Klopp's agent, Marc Kosicke, meanwhile believes that taking over from Joachim Low as manager of the German national team could be an option.

Kosicke told Welt: "Jurgen himself once said that in the event that Joachim Low someday no longer wants to be the national coach and it would be possible for him do that, this is an option for him.

"Liverpool would even like to extend it [his current contract].

"He felt again at the recent celebrations [after winning the Champions League] what a great club Liverpool is and that he is in the right place at the right time.

"Jurgen is currently not affordable. But it is difficult to measure the transfer fee in his case anyway.

"How is this going to work for a coach who has increased the club's value from nearly £900million to just under £2.8billion? That is not how it works."
