Danny Rowe ensured AFC Fylde made a winning start to the new Vanarama National League season as his penalty decided a 2-1 win at 10-man Aldershot.
Fylde dominated the first half, with Rowe denied an early goal when Dan Bradley’s pinpoint cross was cut out.
Their summer signing Kurt Willoughby crashed a header against the bar before Aldershot were reduced to 10 men when James Rowe was shown a straight red card in the 27th minute.
Fylde took advantage and Neill Byrne rose highest two minutes later to steer Mark Yeates’ free-kick into the net.
It was nearly two shortly before the break as Danny Rowe thundered an effort past keeper Mitch Walker, with substitute George Fowler putting in an expert block on the line.
The next scorer was Danny Rowe, who notched 27 goals for Fylde last season. This one came from the spot after Bradley was felled while attempting to head home.
Debutant Connor Shields ensured a tense finale when halving the deficit in the 75th minute, his shot squeezing in from a tight angle.
