PEP GUARDIOLA taunted Liverpool that Manchester City won the trophy their rivals really wanted last season — the Premier League.
The Kop kings lifted the Champions League for a sixth time but were a point behind Guardiola’s City in the title race.
And after 30 years of failing to land it, the Etihad chief is sure City’s winning campaign will have hurt Jurgen Klopp’s men.
Ahead of the Community Shield showdown at Wembley on Sunday, Guardiola said: “I’m pretty sure Liverpool would have liked to win the last Premier League.
“After 30 years not winning the Premier League, they would like to win the Premier League.
“It is incredibly good what they have done in the Champions League but I think winning the Premier League is really good.
“They were just one point behind but we were better by one point.
“Both teams were fantastic last season. Why do you have to say this team is better than the other one? Both were good.”
The two teams do battle for the first piece of domestic silverware in the traditional season curtain-raiser under the arch in London today.
And Guardiola does not believe Liverpool’s European title took any of the gloss off his own domestic Treble winners.
He added: “No, no way. Why can we not share the glory? We would like to win the Champions League — big respect to Liverpool.
“Winning the Champions League is so difficult — so, so complicated.
“That’s why winning the Champions League gets all credit.
“But why is it higher than what we have done over 11 months?”
