Liverpool to make left-back transfer decision as Jurgen Klopp weighs up squad options

LIVERPOOL look to set to loan out rising star Adam Lewis before the transfer window shuts on Thursday.

The talented left-back is highly regarded at Anfield.

However, Jurgen Klopp reckons he needs first-team football and could authorise a temporary departure.

Lewis, 19, was a standout performer in the U23 side last season. He racked up 29 appearances and recorded six assists.

Speaking last month, club legend John Aldridge claimed Lewis had the ability to step up and provide cover for Andrew Robertson.

"Young Adam Lewis could be a contender to step into the team at left back," Aldridge told The Independent.

"I would never want to put too much pressure on kids at a formative stage of their career, something would have to go very badly wrong for Lewis not to hit the big-time because he has all the raw materials to become a star."

Lewis has recently penned a long-term deal with the Reds.

However, The Sun claim a short stint away from Merseyside is now on the cards.

Klopp has been linked with other left-backs as cover for Robertson.

Augsburg ace Philipp Max has been mooted as one option.

The talented defender has been a solid performer in the Bundesliga.

He's made over 100 appearances in the German top tier since signing from minnows Karlsruher in 2015.

Robertson is the undisputed No. 1 option at left-back.

But Klopp is now lacking an experienced understudy following Alberto Moreno's departure to Villarreal.

Liverpool lost to Manchester City on penalties yesterday in a pulsating Community Shield clash.

Raheem Sterling had put City ahead before Joel Matip levelled.

Georginio Wijnaldum had his decisive spot kick saved by Claudio Bravo after the match ended 1-1 after normal time.

"Wow, it was a really good performance, a powerful one in the second half," said Klopp.

"Both teams had a similar pre-season. I spoke to Kevin de Bruyne after the game and we both said we don't really know where we are yet.

"The least we deserved was the equaliser, one save decided it and I cannot be disappointed today. The performance was much more important than a win. We know we are still here, we can still play proper football."
