Nicky Law is too good for League Two, claims Exeter boss Matt Taylor

Matt Taylor declared his Exeter side lucky to have Nicky Law after the midfielder fired the Grecians to a 1-0 win at Stevenage.

Law’s stunning 89th-minute strike – a fine finish from the outside of his left boot – earned victory in a game that looked destined to finish goalless at the Lamex Stadium.

But Taylor knows he cannot take his key asset for granted after Exeter made it two wins from as many fixtures to start the League Two campaign.

“We came close. We had a few near misses. I wouldn’t say we wasted our chances, but we didn’t take advantage of them,” he said.

“And then a little bit of quality from our best player over the past 12-to-18 months, Nicky Law, wins it for us late on.

“He’s got a quality of another level. He’s not a League Two player and we’re lucky to have him.

“We’ve got to get him on the ball closer to the opposition goal.

“You never know when a goal’s going to come but there’s no-one you want to ball to fall to more than Nicky Law.

“There isn’t a better time to score. We still expected a barrage from them but we managed to control the game for those last five minutes.

“We kept them at arm’s length for the majority of the game. That’s testament to all of the boys.”

Exeter goalkeeper Lewis Ward was called into action early on to thwart Paul Taylor’s thumping effort, while Randell Williams curled wide at the other end.

Home keeper Paul Farman did well to deny Williams’ free-kick, with Pierce Sweeney smashing into the side netting in the follow-up.

Exeter had claims for a penalty waved away after Law went down but the former Rangers man popped up with the deciding moment.

Stevenage manager Dino Maamria said: “We didn’t deserve to lose that game.

“In the last 10 minutes, one or two of our players were struggling physically, they probably sensed that and they got the goal.

“I was worried after the first game of the season because we were very poor. This time we had some great performances. Paul Taylor was fantastic.

“We aren’t fit enough yet. We had a few players back on the pitch today after not playing for a while.

“But that’s what we’ve got, we’ve got a young bench and there are players who will gain that experience over time.

“We know what we’ve got here, too many injuries in the treatment room. Hopefully we’ll start getting one or two back.

“We were down to 10 for the corner because Chris Stokes was hurt but we needed to defend it first – you can’t be down to 10 men with five minutes to go.”
