Ipswich boss Paul Lambert bemoans Luke Chambers error

Ipswich boss Paul Lambert bemoaned “a terrible mistake” by his skipper Luke Chambers after Sunderland grabbed a point in a 1-1 draw at Portman Road.

Chambers was robbed on the touchline by Marc McNulty, who crossed for Lynden Gooch’s equaliser for the visitors – his second goal of the season.

The 64th-minute strike cancelled out Luke Garbutt’s opener for the Blues, which was also the Everton loanee’s second of the campaign.

The Tractor Boys had 17 attempts on goal and Lambert felt his team should have secured all three points.

Lambert said: “The first half was absolutely brilliant, chance after chance after chance.

“The atmosphere, everything was great. We got the goal, there was not one problem in the game. The mistake was terrible, a terrible mistake. He (Chambers) knows it.

“We were excellent, we couldn’t complain with the way we played the whole game. We don’t make that error, we win the game.

“Sunderland never really hurt us or created many chances and I never felt threatened.

“We were playing really well. It’s not a bad thing sometimes when you’re disappointed with a draw.”

The Town boss also praised the home support, with a crowd of 24,051 watching the League One clash.

“What a support we’ve got, absolutely brilliant. We have to keep that and hopefully they enjoy coming back and watching that type of football,” he said.

“As I’ve said before, we’re up and down because we’re young, we’re a young side but my goodness, we’ve got incredible energy.

“The support has been absolutely fantastic, we sold more season tickets than last season and the fans are coming back, that’s the beauty of it.”

Sunderland boss Jack Ross was unhappy with his side’s first-half performance but was pleased with the reaction after a “frank discussion” at half-time.

“The first half was a long way short of where we need to be, a long way short of what we need to do as a team and a long way short of what I would put my name to,” he said.

“Ultimately, it always comes back to me. There was a frank discussion at half-time because we were a goal behind to a team that did the fundamentals a lot better than us.

“They were aggressive, competitive, physical. That gave them a platform to go and create and we were deservedly behind.

“Second half we do that and take something from the game. A lot to contemplate, the first half is a long way off.

“The second half was a huge difference and emphasises that you need to do the basics to show the quality you have. We’ve got players with quality but you need to do the basics.”

Asked whether a change of system from 3-5-2 to 4-4-2 aided his team, Ross added: “I think after every game you have a lot to digest.

“The game today, because we didn’t do the fundamentals, you have to question the system.

“We did change it in the first half, it helped us a bit but not a lot because we weren’t doing the basics.

“Second half we were a lot more comfortable. I spoke in pre-season about early games giving players the chance to take possession of the jersey but they then have to reach certain levels to keep that.

“If they don’t there’s enough competition that they won’t keep their place. It’s a harsh lesson.

“We came here to try and win the game, we didn’t give ourselves a chance in the first half but in the second we could have done if we had replicated that over 90 minutes.”
