MK Dons win grudge match against AFC Wimbledon on penalties

MK Dons beat AFC Wimbledon 4-2 on penalties in a fiercely-fought Carabao Cup first-round encounter at Kingsmeadow that was left level at 2-2 after 90 minutes.

Wimbledon’s Scott Wagstaff opened the scoring before Conor McGrandles and David Kusumu replied, with Luke O’Neill’s injury-time equaliser forcing penalties – after both sides had missed spot-kicks in normal time.

Alex Gilbey held his nerve to win the shootout for the visitors after MK’s Baily Cargill and Wimbledon’s Callum Reilly and Joe Pigott had their penalties saved.

Amid a hostile atmosphere McGrandles spurned a chance to open the scoring when he blazed his second-minute spot-kick over the bar.

The visitors were made to pay six minutes later when Wagstaff fired home from the edge of the box.

McGrandles made amends by slotting an effort into the bottom corner in the 17th minute before celebrating in front of the home fans.

Five minutes after the restart, academy graduate Kasumu handed MK Dons the lead as his 20-yard strike beat Nikola Tzanev.

Wimbledon had a penalty of their own when Kwesi Appiah was felled but captain Pigott fluffed his lines as his tame effort was denied by Lee Nicholls.

O’Neill then fired home from an acute angle deep into stoppage time, only for the hosts to suffer the cruel penalties fate.
