Paul Warne pleased with Rotherham’s work-rate during battling Burton win

Rotherham boss Paul Warne was happy to take three points back to South Yorkshire after a tight game against Burton.

The match was settled in the visitors’ favour thanks to goalkeeper Kieran O’Hara’s unfortunate 24th-minute own goal.

The Burton keeper initially deflected Ben Wiles’ shot onto the post but then saw the ball bounce off him into the net to hand the Millers their second away league win.

“Overall, I am pretty pleased,” Warne said. “I always want football utopia and perfection.

“I am probably never going to get that so I can’t moan. To come here, where I think they will easily be in the top 10 and win is a real statement of intent, and apart from the home game we have had a good
start to the season.

“I am really pleased with the group.”

Kyle Vassell struck the crossbar as Rotherham searched in vain for a second goal to put the game to bed and Warne felt that his side were not quite at their best.

“I thought we created enough chances to win the game comfortably. We didn’t take them.

“I didn’t think we were as good on the ball but our work off the ball was excellent.

“The lads put their bodies on the line. We looked a threat on set-pieces and I am disappointed we didn’t score off one of those.”

Two straight away wins is in sharp contrast to Rotherham’s struggles in the Sky Bet Championship last season and Warne put it down to his side’s attacking intent.

“In League One, we come into every game and we have gone with three up front again.

“It probably didn’t work as well as I would have like but we come with an intent to win. Any win is good, but an away win feels sweeter.”

The big talking point was the penalty that was not given by referee Nick Kinseley when midfielder Scott Fraser was brought down by Rotherham captain Richard Wood in the 68th minute.

“Sometimes referees don’t affect the game but his (performance) today most definitely affected the result of the game to the detriment of both supporters and players.

“Everybody in the ground knows that it was a penalty,” a frustrated Nigel Clough said.

“It was a hard match. I am pleased with the performance. I don’t think we did too much wrong today against one of the top teams in the division and all we need is a break at the moment.

“If we don’t get that penalty given I can’t see us getting one all season.

“We have hit the woodwork twice, Liam Boyce has had a good header and we have had a few shots blocked.

“We have had enough chances to have won the game today but the penalty is the stand-out. If you get that, especially the timing of it in the game, then I think we go on and win it.”
