Danny Whitaker delighted with Macclesfield’s last-gasp win

Macclesfield’s caretaker manager Danny Whitaker was “over the moon” to snatch a last-gasp victory over Northampton.

Whitaker has taken the reins on a temporary basis after Sol Campbell left in the week and his tenure began in dramatic style at Sixfields.

Ben Stephens’ well-taken goal gave Macclesfield a half-time lead but Jordan Turnbull levelled in the second half.

Theo Archibald struck in the final minute to grab all three points, and Whitaker said: “It’s always difficult when a manager leaves but you have to get on with the job and I’m over the moon with the win.

“It’s absolutely incredible and the work the lads put in today was second to none and they got their rewards.

“It’s not only about today, it’s about how they’ve started the season in general and they just carried on from where they left off.

“The recruitment has changed completely compared to before. We’ve got young, hungry players that are ambitious and want to go to the highest possible level.

“They’re all putting in a shift every week and it was magnificent to win it like that. I was ready to take the point at one stage because they were coming on strong at the end.

“It just goes to show that if you keep plugging away we’ve got the talent in the squad to win games.”

Northampton have yet to win any of their first four games in all competitions and manager Keith Curle was deeply disappointed with his side’s display.

“The result hurts and the manner of the performance hurts,” he said.

“We created chances but you’ve got to take those chances and we need that ruthlessness to come out of the changing room and take it into gameday.

“We created enough chances, the goalkeeper made a couple of good saves and we had a couple of chances that we didn’t put in the back of the net.

“You get rewards if you do the right things. We dominated the first 10 or 15 minutes, we won the ball back, got it into wide areas and put it into the box.

“They didn’t have a way of stopping it but some of our players then thought it was too easy and when players stop doing what they are meant to do, the play becomes slow, predictable and frustrating.

“We showed we’re good enough to get into the final third and put good balls into the box in the first 15 minutes and if we keep doing that eventually we will hurt teams.”
