Sam Ricketts: Come-from-behind victory will give Shrewsbury confidence

Shrewsbury boss Sam Ricketts believes the manner of their late 3-2 win against Accrington will give them “a shot in the arm confidence wise.”

Up until their trip to the Wham Stadium, the Shrews had only scored one goal but three goals in 13 minutes sealed a memorable win after they went 2-0 down.

Former Stanley defender Omar Buckles was judged to have pushed over Colby Bishop in the area and the striker sent Max O’Leary the wrong way on 67 minutes to give the Reds the lead.

Five minutes later Dion Charles curled home from 20 yards for his first Football League goal.

Shrewsbury got back into it on 77 minutes when Ryan Giles whipped in a cross which Dimi Evtimov cleared but it hit Mark Hughes and went into the net for an own goal.

Then Fejiri Okenabirhie turned home a corner from close range after 86 minutes to make it 2-2.

Daniel Udoh raced from midfield and slotted the ball past the outrushing Evtimov to seal their second win of the campaign.

“I am delighted with the win, the three points are everything,” said Ricketts. “Even when we were 2-0 down, I felt it we didn’t deserve it. I was devastated as it was a good performance, we moved the ball around well.

“We couldn’t take our early chances and then we took three at once.

“We are a work in progress but what we did see is the team spirit and the character in the team, everyone celebrated on and off the pitch.

“We had the drive to come back and the togetherness will be vital to being successful. We haven’t been scoring enough goals so far and then two subs Fej and Dan came on with nothing to lose and they finished up with a goal each, Dan with the winner. It’s a great story.

“We are on the right path and this result will give everyone a shot in the arm confidence wise. We can only get better.”

Stanley are still searching for their first win and manager John Coleman admitted the loss was hard to take.

“You can’t legislate for three basic mistakes, they were individual errors which have cost us. We haven’t collapsed, it was just a freak occurrence.

“Our second goal was one of the best you will see this season and, from the position where we seemed to have won the game, we have conspired to gift them a goal and then made two errors which have cost us the game.

“If we play like we did tonight between now and the end of the season we will end high up the table as some of our play was breathtaking at times.

“You can’t overreact to the loss or else you will lose the plot, we have to analyse the mistakes and put a system in place to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
