John McGreal hails Colchester’s defensive effort

Colchester boss John McGreal saluted a solid rearguard action from his side as they triumphed 1-0 at stuttering Oldham.

Frank Nouble’s strike ultimately separated the two sides on a day when the U’s extended their unbeaten run to four matches.

Both sides struck the woodwork on a day when the Essex outfit were probably rather fortunate to have secured maximum points.

McGreal said: “I think we’ve beaten a very good team.

“And as good as Oldham were, I thought defensively we were equally as good.

“We gave them a little bit too much space at times which we knew would happen because of the way they play and the type of system they have.

“But we knew the counter was on and there were a couple of opportunities where we could have scored from that.

“I’ve got to compliment our players, after the week that we’ve had.

“We came home at silly o’clock after the Grimsby game, to then go into the Northampton game, then to win (at Crystal Palace) on Tuesday and then pick ourselves up to travel again yesterday credit to them – I thought they were excellent.

“Sometimes, we all want this free-flowing football and stuff like that which the club is renowned for but today was all about a solid defending, determination, grit and getting your blocks in.”

Oldham boss Laurent Banide is still looking for answers as his side failed to build on last weekend’s opening victory of the League Two season against Cambridge.

Frenchman Banide said: “We are all frustrated of course, because we thought we’d played better this week. It was a better performance.

“I don’t know how we didn’t score a goal. We needed to be better when we had chances to take a goal.

“We need to continue playing like this, but of course we need goals. We need at least one or two each game.

“The players worked hard for that, and everybody is trying to get better step by step.

“I think we created four or five chances in the first half alone, but you have to take them if we’re going to get out of this situation.

“We didn’t score today, and that’s football.

“It’s so important that we continue to create chances. There has to be more concentration too.

“We must accept these results, but it is another frustrating result for us today.”
