John Askey hails Port Vale’s improved defence

Port Vale boss John Askey praised his side for keeping a clean sheet in their 1-0 Sky Bet League Two win over Cambridge.

Vale shipped five goals last time out with goalkeeper Scott Brown stressing they could not keep conceding with that regularity.

And they bounced back perfectly by holding the U’s at bay to pick up three points at Vale Park.

Askey said: “It’s important that we get clean sheets and it’s important that we get results at home.

“We know we aren’t going to compete with the very best teams away, but at home we can.

“It wasn’t happening enough last year and we have to make sure that continues to happen this season.

“Winning at home gives you every chance of doing well in this league.

“I think it’s imperative for all teams to do well at home.

“It was stop start and that was mainly down to the referee.

“I thought we controlled the game. They never had a chance.

“We missed an easy chance early on, but we got there in the end.

“I was pleased with the way we went about things.

“The pitch was sticky and that didn’t help us pass the ball around.

“It’s the whole team we should be praising.

“I think it’ll start to help us when the pitches get slicker because the weather changes.”

Leon Davies’ 83rd-minute own goal separated the two sides as the U’s wait to pick up a first point at Vale Park since 1993 went on.

Ex-Cambridge boy David Amoo forced the own goal with a good fizzing ball across the face of goal.

Right at the death Harvey Knibbs’ bouncing header was easily saved by Brown when he should have done better.

And boss Colin Calderwood said: “We never got any rhythm at all throughout the game and that’s disappointing.

“We were nowhere near the level that we want to be at at all.

“The throw in we give it away. The team were far too slow and lacking desire.

“They had no courage and you don’t deserve to get a point after that.

“I must admit they had the better of the bits and pieces of the game which it was.

“The referee gave too many fouls, it was a bit stop start.

“Our use from the ball, we just didn’t give our strikers any service at all.

“We had one semi-decent chance for the equaliser, but that would have got us off the hook.

“We didn’t deserve anything from that game whatsoever.”
