Jimmy Bell admits a half-time team talk helped Accrington beat MK Dons

Accrington assistant manager Jimmy Bell admitted a half-time team talk helped the Reds to their first win of the season – a 2-1 victory over MK Dons.

Stanley were guilty of missed chances in the first half and the visitors led thanks to their first shot of the half, with Kieran Agard outmuscling the home defence and firing home in the 18th minute.

Joe Pritchard hit the underside of the crossbar in the 27th minute but Stanley made a chance count seven minutes into the second half when Colby Bishop bundled the ball home after Jordan Clark’s shot was pushed out.

Mark Hughes headed home a Pritchard cross seven minutes later to put Stanley ahead and then Bishop had a penalty saved by Lee Nicholls in the 64th minute.

They were almost made to pay but Rhys Healey had a goal ruled out for offside in the 90th minute.

“In the first half, the forwards weren’t getting into the right positions and it took a half-time team talk to get it right after the break,” said Bell.

“We were getting into better positions and Colby was there to score the first and he led the line brilliantly.

“Colby’s a smashing lad and level-headed so I am sure his confidence won’t be affected by their keeper saving the penalty, I am sure he will take the next one.

“Mark got a goal his performance deserved and he and Ross (Sykes) were mountains at the back.

“We could have won by more.

“It was a massive win for us and it’s a big step to get the first three points on the board.

“There is a real feeling of euphoria in the dressing room and it’s a massive step for us, it’s a start for us and something to build on.”

MK Dons boss Paul Tisdale was disappointed with his side’s performance.

“We did not do enough in the game, they were the better side and we need to do a lot better.

“I thought the ref had a lot of decisions to make and got most of his decisions right but, for the offside, I felt it was an error.

“The ref said the assistant saw Sam Nombe flick the ball onto Rhys and that’s why it was offside.

“We didn’t think Sam got a touch and I think that was an error but, in the grand scheme of things, we would have been very fortunate to get a draw.

“We weren’t good enough. It was so far away from what I expected, hoped, directed and encouraged and I am disappointed.

“We weren’t good enough and I am searching for positives to be honest. We didn’t deserve anything, they were the better side and they deserved to win the game.”
