Paul Warne praises impact of on-loan striker Jake Hastie

Paul Warne praised Jake Hastie’s impact after the Rangers loanee’s third goal in as many games secured a 1-1 draw with Sunderland.

Hastie moved to the New York Stadium on a season-long loan on transfer-deadline day, having started the season playing in Rangers’ Europa League win over St Joseph’s.

He has made quite an impression in South Yorkshire, with his equaliser at the Stadium of Light following earlier strikes against Doncaster and Bolton.

Warne said: “Jake’s been here three weeks and done really well. He hasn’t really played a lot of football since April time so he’s still getting into the swing of things really.

“I’ve spent most of the summer trying to get a couple of wingers, and thankfully we managed to get him in before the window closed.

“He’s a menace. Credit to him for the way he played again, he’s a young lad who is trying to make his mark. I thought he played really well for us.”

Warne’s side made the worst possible start on Wearside, with Marc McNulty firing Sunderland into the lead after just 31 seconds.

However, they showed commendable spirit to recover, and the game changed from the moment Aiden McGeady failed to convert a first-half penalty.

Rotherham were the better side throughout the second half, with Hastie claiming a deserved equaliser shortly after the hour mark.

Warne said: “We came here to win, we didn’t come to sit back or anything like that. The way that Sunderland played in the first 20 or 25 minutes made it very difficult for us.

“They definitely caused us problems, but I thought we grew into the game. I thought we should definitely have had at least one penalty, and the turning point was definitely Danny’s (Iversen) save from their penalty.

“We were buzzing to get them in at half-time, and we were much more aggressive in the second half, winning headers and winning balls in their half. Our second-half performance was really good.”

Sunderland recorded 15 1-1 draws as they missed out on automatic promotion last season, and Jack Ross admits his side’s inability to keep clean sheets remains a major issue.

The Sunderland boss said: “We’re disappointed not to get the win. We had a period of superiority, scored, and had other opportunities to go further ahead. But I’m loath to be too critical of the front players because they’ve delivered this season and done well for a while now.

“The harsh reality for us is that we need to keep clean sheets. We’re 10 games into the season now in league and cup, and we haven’t kept a clean sheet.

“That buck and responsibility always stops with me. It’s my fault today – we need to continue to work hard at it to make sure we begin to do it (keep clean sheets) because if we do that, we turn what has been a decent 10 games into a really good 10 games following on from now.

“It was a difficult game against a good side, but on reflection, we’re disappointed with the chances we had and then the failure to keep a clean sheet because that’s turned three points into one.”
